Australian Oaks

The AJC Australian Oaks is a terrific Group 1 thoroughbred race that takes place at the picturesque Royal Randwick racecourse in Sydney.

Held on one of the final race meetings of the autumn carnival in Sydney, the Group 1 AJC Australian Oaks is one of three Group 1 features on Doncaster Mile Day, which is now run on the third Saturday in April after moving from its Easter Monday slot on the racing calendar. The Doncaster Mile (1600m) and The Galaxy (1100m) are the other two major features.

The AJC Australian Oaks is run over the traditional Oaks distance of 2400m and is an elite staying event for three-year-old fillies.

Run under set weight conditions, the AJC Australian Oaks is worth $350,000 and is usually won by one of the higher seeded fillies on the field because of the set weights.

Lead-Up Races

Held on the second last race meeting in Sydney during the autumn, the three-year-old fillies contesting the AJC Australian Oaks could have come via a number of earlier events.

The Oaks is an excellent follow up race for horses that previously ran in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) a fortnight earlier on Golden Slipper Day. The Randwick and Rosehill Guineas’ are another two good three-year-old set weight features of the carnival that serve as a good guide to the AJC Australian Oaks.

A good final preparatory run for the Australian Oaks is the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) held the week before at the same track.

History

One of the longest running Sydney races, the AJC Australian Oaks was first run in 1885 and Uralla was the first winner.

It was upgraded from a Principal race to a Group 1 feature in 1980 and has been won by some brilliant female runners including Daffodil 92009), Dizelle (2005), Sunday Joy (2003) and Triscay (1991).
