Streama Faces Small Field In 2012 Australian Oaks

April 20th, 2012

The 2012 Australian Oaks is due to run at Royal Randwick tomorrow April 21, 2012.

Streama is currently the overwhelming $1.60 favourite to win the 2012 Australian Oaks.

Trainer Guy Walter is not happy about the small field in the race, which will mean the filly will more than likely have to lead.

Walter said he would leave the final decision to jockey Hugh Bowman.

“I would prefer that didn’t happen but it may be forced on him,” Walter said.

“I generally give my jockeys a completely free hand on how they ride.

“And Hugh has ridden a couple of tactically brilliant races on this filly to win stakes races on her in the past.”

Streama finished fifth in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic two starts back before finishing half a length behind Mosheen in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes last start.

Walter is confident that Streama has what it takes to continue to improve in the 2012 Australian Oaks.

Bowman agress entirely.

“In the Coolmore, at the end of the race she was really under the pump but last start she was strong at the end,” Bowman said.

“The fact she came through that (tough) run in the Coolmore and ran a really good race in the Vinery gives me a great deal of confidence.

“She really seems to be on track and it doesn’t matter what the weather does.”
