April 15th, 2014

Securing an impressive record of three wins and two places from only eight competitive race starts so far, Lucia Valentina debuted with a strong turn of foot to win the Tauranga Xmas Races Maiden (1200m) on October.

Comfortably winning the Group 3 Wellington Stakes (1600m) in only her third race start, the Savabeel filly caused a shock when falling in the Group 2 Great North Guineas (1600m) on December 26th, but recovered well to finish second behind fellow Australian Oaks acceptor Rising Romance in the Group 2 Royal Stakes (2000m).

Immediately coming to the attention of the racing community when finishing third in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) in her first appearance in Australia, Lucia Valentina was blocked for a run in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m), but responded in the best way possible when comfortably claiming the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) last time out.

Having drawn the ideal barrier 2 for the 2014 Australian Oaks, Lucia Valentina will be offered a prime opportunity to continue her good run of form with jockey Hugh Bowman on board.

securing three wins and three places from only nine starts, Rising Romance (barrier 4) has quickly shot to the forefront of the New Zealand staying community; winning the Group 2 Royal Stakes and finishing an unlucky second in both the Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) and Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) in her three starts before crossing the ditch.

Settling in poor position rounding the bend in the Vinery Stud Stakes last time out, the Ekraar filly displayed an impressive turn of foot to finish just outside the places in fourth and gain priceless race fitness ahead of the 2014 Australian Oaks; her major target this time in.

Trainer Guy Walter will be offered twice the chance of success in the 2014 Australian Oaks, having accepted positions in the final field for classy stable mates Zanbagh and Missvonn.

Quickly building to the task over an impressive 2013 spring preparation, Zanbagh (barrier 6) followed up back-to-back victories in the City Of Ballarat Plate (1600m) and Sportsbet Top Tote Plus Handicap (2000m) with an incredible run to finish an unlucky second in the major Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) on November 7th.

Continuing her consistent form through to her current campaign, the Bernardini filly won the Group 3 Keith F Nolan Open (1600m) and finished fifth in the Vinery Stud Stakes in her two most recent appearances.

Arguably hitting career best form this time in, Missvonn will have to overcome the slightly awkward barrier 11 if to secure a third career victory in the 2014 Australian Oaks.

A surprising contestant when finishing sixth in the Vinery Stud Stakes, the Teofilo filly was unlucky to finish second when blocked for a run in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) last time out, but is more than capable of figuring again this weekend on what is expected to be a damp track and with jockey Craig Newitt confirmed for retain the ride.
