April 17th, 2014

A strong field of 15 has been confirmed to line up for the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) on day 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick this weekend, offering punters several key opportunities to place a winning bet.

Fresh off the back of her strong win in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) last time out, New Zealand raider Lucia Valentina has opened as and maintained favouritism in betting markets for the 2014 Australian Oaks at a short quote of $2.50, ahead of Zanbagh ($6), Rising Romance ($2.20) and Suavito; currently offered at generous $10 odds.

Will Lucia Valentina make it two Group 1 wins on the trot, or will one of her talented rivals cause an upset?

Missvonn ($16)

A proven performer on soaking, soggy tracks, Missvonn offers punters sensational value for money at current $16 odds for success in the 2014 Australian Oaks. Securing a total of two wins and two places from nine race starts to date, the Teofilo filly was unlucky when blocked for a run and sixth in the Vinery Stud Stakes on April 5th, similarly when second in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) last time out. Allocated the slightly wide barrier 11, Missvonn is likely to settle within the pack before making a claim in the race’s dying stages, and will be partnered by in-form jockey Craig Newitt.

Rising Romance ($6.50)

Contesting an impressive three wins and three places from only nine competitive starts to date, Rising Romance was arguably the biggest winner at Tuesday’s Australian Oaks barrier draw of all frontrunners, having received the ideal barrier 4. Claiming the Group 2 Royal Stakes (2000m) and finishing an unlucky second in both the Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) and Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) in her last three starts prior to crossing the ditch, the Ekraar filly displayed a keen turn of foot to finish a strong fourth in the Vinery Stud Stakes last time out, and has been confirmed to be partnered by in-form jockey James McDonald once again this weekend.

Lucia Valentina ($2.50)

Securing three wins and two places from only eight race starts to date, Lucia Valentina has steadily built to the task since arriving in Australian in early March; finishing third in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) first-up before being blocked for a run in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) prior to her most recent Vinery Stud Stakes victory. Allocated the ideal barrier 2, Hugh Bowman has been confirmed to retain the ride on the Savabeel filly this weekend and will be tough to beat if in good position rounding onto the final straight.
