57 Australian Oaks 2015 First Acceptances Taken

March 10th, 2015

Fifty-seven three-year-old fillies remain in 2015 Australian Oaks contention after first acceptances for the April 11 classic at Royal Randwick closed on Monday.

Last month 120 nominations were taken for this year’s $1 million Group 1 ATC Australian Oaks (2400m), a figure that has more than halved this week.

Run on Day 2 of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival’s The Championships, the Australian Oaks is one of eight Group 1 races held over the two Saturday meetings that headline the season’s action in New South Wales.

Of the remaining young female gallopers eyeing the trophy, two fillies share top spot in the latest Australian Oaks odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with First Seal and Set Square paying $5 each to win.

The John Thompson-trained First Seal features in a host of yesterday’s first acceptances, connections keeping the options for this very smart Group 1 winning three-year-old wide open.

She took out the Flight Stakes over the Randwick mile in the spring and was last seen taking out the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on February 28 ahead of her bid at a second elite level title at Rosehill in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) this Saturday.

Ciaron Maher’s Reset filly Set Square meanwhile is already an Oaks winner having won the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington last November before her first-up second in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) on February 21.

Also high up the futures Australian Oaks betting markets post-first declarations are the Gai Waterhouse-trained Adrift and Chris Waller’s progressive filly Winx.

Waterhouse last won an Australian Oaks in 2010 with Once Were Wild and hopes to do so again in 2015 with her daughter of Zabeel Adrift, winner of the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at Randwick two back.

Sydney’s premier trainer Waller meanwhile won the Oaks two years ago with Royal Descent (2013) and has a strong chance of another victory next month with his Flight Stakes runner-up Winx.

Waller’s other notable Australian Oaks entry is the stable’s Thousand Guineas winner from last spring Amicus who ran fourth in the Surround Stakes last start.

His other major first acceptor this week is High Chaparral filly Ballet Suite, a progressive type yet to be tested in stakes’ company who has won two of her four starts to date.

Other notable Australian Oaks hopes include the Peter Moody-trained The Vanity winner in Melbourne Sweet And Speedy, Peter Williams’ New Zealand raider Vavasour last seen running eighth in the NZ Derby over 2400m in late February, Bart & James Cummings’ untapped Hussonet filly Zarzali, Fenway for Seymour’s Lee & Shannon Hope, and Crown Oaks runner-up from the spring Thunder Lady who also won the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) last Victoria Derby Day.

See below for the current Australian Oaks 2015 first declarations, the final field due out on Tuesday April 7 at 9am (AEDT).

Early betting is already open and going off at Ladbrokes.com.au however making now the perfect time to open your account with the country’s leading bookie who will also match your first deposit dollar for dollar up to $250!
