Gust Of Wind to Backmark in 2015 Australian Oaks

April 8th, 2015

Classy filly Gust Of Wind ran on for a commendable fourth in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) on Day 1 of The Championships, and will be settled at the tail of the field in Saturday’s Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m), according to trainer John Sargent.

Partnered by Zac Purton on Monday, Gust Of Wind was reportedly never comfortable in running and did not respond favourably when asked to move through the field, between runners.

Sargent has been thrilled with the form and class displayed by the daughter of Darci Brahma through her short four start career so far and told RSN he will instruct new rider Tye Angland to settle behind the field in an attempt to overcome her previous troubles in transit.

“She is the type of horse that Thunder Lady was in the spring,” Sargent said.

“It didn’t go to plan; we got back on the fence and then Purton followed Joao Moreira and then he came back to us and we had to go back out.

“He also stated that the horse wasn’t that comfortable between other horses and when she has won she has come down the outside.

“I will be instructing Tye to go back on her and stay out and just get down the outside.

“The good thing going for her is that she is rock hard and she will get the trip – she will get two miles eventually she is that laid back.

“It was a good run albeit she probably doesn’t have the class of Thunder Lady, Winx and the New Zealand filly coming over.”

Debuting for fourth in a Seymour maiden events over 1000m in December before immediately returning to the paddock, Gust Of Wind found exceptional form leading into her maiden black type tilt on Monday; taking out each of the Golden Fleece Hotel Maiden (1400m) and Darley Handicap (1600m); the latter having charged home late from the tail of the field. is currently offering the best 2015 Australian Oaks odds, for which Gust Of Wind can be taken at a particularly generous quote of $15 for success.
