Savaria Capable of Trans-Tasman Oaks Double

April 10th, 2015

Kiwi trainer Royden Bergerson has revealed Saturday’s Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) has not always been the target for three-year-old Savaria but is confident she will lay a great account for herself on Day 2 of The Championships at Randwick.

Savaria has been the standout filly of the current crop of New Zealand three-year-olds and booked her pass into the 2015 Australian Oaks when displaying a keen turn of foot late to take out the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) on March 14th.

Thrilled with the form and class displayed by the daughter of Savabeel this year, Bergerson told AAP he has been surprised by her quick progression to the highest level of racing and believes she is in the right form for a competitive tilt on Saturday.

“We hadn’t even nominated for this race,” Bergerson said.

“The owner won some money off her in the Oaks and he said just nominate her and if she does all right in the next couple of weeks we will take her to Sydney.

“She’s surprised me actually. She’s done so well and she just keeps stepping up to the plate.

“Kiwis always do pretty well over here don’t they? Except the cricketers.”

Debuting for fifth in a Woodville maiden event over 1400m in October before immediately returning to the paddock, Savaria broke through for a maiden race win in the Pearl Series Maiden (1400m) first-up this time before placing third in the Queensland Winter Racing Maiden (1400m) on January 24th.

Unlucky to be blocked for a run when second in the Oaks Prelude (1800m) on February 14th, the mare out of Amathea will be chasing a hat-trick of race wins this weekend having taken out the Group 3 Lowland Stakes (2100m) in her only other start prior to the New Zealand Oaks. is currently offering the best 2015 Australian Oaks odds, for which Savaria can be taken at a particularly generous quote of $7.50 for success.
