Gust Of Wind is the 2015 Australian Oaks Champion

April 11th, 2015

Three-year-old Gust Of Wind has posted an impressive career-best win at Royal Randwick this afternoon; completely a perfectly-timed race to take out the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) on Day 2 of The Championships.

Jumping from the gates poorly, jockey Tye Angland was forced to settle Gust Of Wind off the pace of early leaders Candelara, Rustic Melody and stable mate Thunder Lady who set a reasonable tempo away from the barriers.

Pressing forward along the rails over the back straight, Angland found a good position two from the lead inside Thunder Lady rounding the final bend.

Cutting the corner and offered a clear racing line upon reaching the final straight, the daughter of Darci Brahma produced a monumental turn of foot over the last 300m; opening the gap and hitting the line well in the clear of Winx and Candelara.

Jockey Tye Angland produced a typically polished ride on Gust Of Wind for success in the 2015 Australian Oaks and

“I really wanted to stick on Thunder Lady and ride her as I rode her last start and though she’d win the Oaks, but turned out Zac (Purton) got the booking,” Angland said.

“Going through this horse’s races the distance was always going to suit.

“Got home really good on Monday, quick back-up, step up in distance which really suited her and I served it up to them on the corner and she just kept running.

“I did not work early and ended up on the inside of Thunder Lady, crept up inside Hughie (Bowman, Candelara) who was leading and sort of skitched them on the corner and she just kept running, she’s a great stayer this filly.”

John Sargent was understandably thrilled with Gust Of Wind’s performance for success in the 2015 Australian Oaks and confirmed both her and Thunder Lady will return to the paddock ahead of the Spring Carnival in Melbourne.

“I love these fillies, just ask my wife!” Sargent said with a laugh.

“She’s come up a level and turned into a real racehorse.

“She’s just improved on a very good race on Monday; great last sectionals that day and she showed today, she just kept through the field and lovely ride by Tye.

“They seemed to be wondering off the fence so it didn’t worry Tye where he went I think and she just kept hitting the line stronger and stronger, so fantastic result.”

Punters who backed Gust Of Wind to win the 2015 Australian Oaks with have been paid out on generous $18 odds for success!
