2016 Australian Oaks Field and Barrier Draw

April 5th, 2016

A talented and capacity field of fourteen three-year-old fillies and two emergencies has been confirmed for Saturday’s featured 2016 Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m); highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Autumn Carnival’s standout runners.

Jameka ran on for second in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) last week and has been confirmed to back-up in the 2016 Australian Oaks.

A standout for Ciaron Maher through the recent Spring Carnival, Jameka returned for third in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) before running second in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) and Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m).

Savaging the line for success in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase (2040m), the Myboycharlie filly ended her campaign with a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m).

Running fourth in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) and fifth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) upon resuming this time, Jameka charged home for third in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) in his only other start prior to the Australian Derby.

Undoubtedly the class horse of the Australian Oaks field, Jameka has been confirmed to be partnered by regular hoop Damien Oliver but may need luck in running from the outside barrier.

Single Gaze delivered Canberra-based trainer Nick Olive a maiden Group 1 victory a fortnight ago and will leave from barrier 9 in the 2016 Australian Oaks.

Posting an impressive three wins and five minors through only thirteen career starts so far, Single Gaze returned this time for fourth in the McGrath Estate Agents BM85 (1200m) pm December 12th before a luckless run for tenth in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m) on Boxing Day.

Charging home for second behind Mahuta in the Gold Coast 3.y.o Guineas (1400m) on January 9th, the daughter of Not A Single Doubt ran second in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) before returning to winning form in the Group 3 Arrowfield Classic (1600m) on March 11th.

Rated an outside chance of success in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) last time, Single Gaze experienced a good run in transit before mustering a slick late turn of foot to post a comfortable one length win.

Honesta was unlucky to be held up in transit in the Vinery Stud Stakes last start but is a proven performer over the distance of the Australian Oaks and at the class and should receive a dream run from the central barrier 8.

Honesta stamped herself as one to watch during the Spring Carnival but was unlucky not to post a maiden black type victory.

Taking out a pair of Doomben minors through August, Honesta returned to Sydney for consecutive second-place finishes in each of the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m), Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m), Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) and Crown Oaks.

Having placed sixth in the Surround Stakes first-up this time, the Monaco Consul filly ran on for fourth in the Arrowfield Classic in her only other start prior to placing sixth in the Vinery Stud Stakes.

Sacred Eye will leave from the rails draw in the Australian Oaks while Vinery Stud Stakes runner-up Valley Girl will relish a step-up in distance and will leave from barrier 10.
