Bonneval has continued the impressive form of New Zealand three-year-olds during the 2017 Autumn Carnival in being crowned the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Jon Snow and Gingernuts franked the colts and geldings form from New Zealand in winning the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) and Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) this season and Bonneval appeared well positioned to win the Australian Oaks after taking out the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) in late March.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Hugh Bowman elected to settle Bonneval off the early pace of Lubiton and Nurse Kitchen, who flew the barriers as set a fair tempo from the outset.

Noted pacesetter Lasqueti Spirit failed to find the lead from the outset, however jockey Jay Ford led the filly forward after she settled and opened a gap of three lengths on Perfect Rhyme and Lubiton across the back straight.

Having received an ideal run in transit, Bowman allowed plenty of time for the filly to settle upon rounding onto the final straight before asking for an extra effort and setting off on the task of running down the two runaway leaders.

Mustering an impressive kick, the Makfi filly continued to eat away at the ten length gap that Lasqueti Spirit and Perfect Rhyme had opened and extended impressively in the final 100m to find the line three lengths in the fore.

Bowman delivered a perfectly-timed ride aboard Bonneval to win the Australian Oaks and cherished the win as more than just a warm-up to Winx in this afternoon’s Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

“They have made a partnership over the last couple of years, but I rode my first VRC Derby winner for Murray with Lion Tamer,” Bowman said.

“This isn’t warm-up, this is a Group 1 Australian Oaks and it is very special to me.

“This is my fourth now and my third one on a New Zealand filly.

“I went and worked her on Tuesday morning and it wasn’t so much the feel that she gave me that excited me, but the way she looked in her coat and the way she went about her business.

“It was a funny race and I had to make a few decisions today because I expected to be first four with Lasqueti Spirit out in front, but when she was slow away I thought what do I do here?

“I decided to just be patient and bide my time and this filly didn’t let me down.

“I was humming along, but I had a good 150 metres to make-up and I don’t care what level you are at, that is hard to do.

“She had it made up by the 100 metre mark and I could enjoy the ride with everyone else.”

Bonneval returned to the races this time for a credible third in the Group 3 Wellfield Desert Gold Stakes (1600m) on January 28th, before responding in the best way possible with a smart win in the Group 2 Sir Tristram Fillies Classic (2000m) a fortnight later.

Repeating the effort in the Group 3 Lowland Stakes (2100m) on March 2nd, Bonneval never appeared in doubt in the New Zealand Oaks and won the race by a comfortable half-length.

In being crowned the 2017 Australian Oaks winner, Bonneval has now posted an impressive five wins and a minor, through only eight career starts.
